Over the past year I have been swinging between using the Oculus Elite Strap and the Halo Strap from GOMRVR. Both are great Head strap replacements for your Quest 2, with their own pros and cons for each, and you can watch my video that dives deep into each of these two head straps here – https://youtu.be/ZYft56k1VVc. But today I will be focusing on the Oculus Quest 2 Elite Strap, and a new accessory from VR Cover that they kindly sent us for review. This is the Elite Strap Foam Pad from VR Cover.
I find the Oculus Elite Strap probably the most comfortable replacement for the Oculus Quest 2 soft strap, the rear part of the strap moulds really well to the back of my head and the headsets support is greatly improved once you’ve tightened the dial at the back. VR Cover thought that this comfort could be improved upon even more by releasing this foam pad, which simply attaches around the backplate section of the Elite strap to add some additional comfort to the back of your head.
With the VR Cover fitted you can see how well it attaches to it. I can’t see it coming loose or falling off, thanks to how tight it is to get onto the back headrest of the strap. It uses the same PU leather material as on their facial interface kit foam pads, so it can be easily wiped down with a damp cloth to remove any sweat from it.
It’s grey colour matches the same colour of the backplate of the Elite Strap, I think VR Cover could have played with some alternative colour options, rather than playing it safe with the same grey colour, which blends in with the Elite strap, or maybe you prefer that?
The thickness of the pad is under 0.5cm, so it’s not that thick overall, so don’t expect it to feel like a pillow at the back of your head. Personally I think it could have been around half its current thickness more to really justify putting something like this on the Elite Strap. Right now it just feels like a token gesture of comfort at the back than anything groundbreaking. I mean, the back plate is pretty soft and comfortable as it is, so you have to have had some major discomfort with it before thinking about buying one of these foam pads. Maybe if you have a bald head or closely shaven head at the back, this might improve comfort a bit, but with thicker hair I don’t know if you would notice that much of a difference.
So for me, this foam pad doesn’t make the back plate any worse on the Elite head strap, but it doesn’t make it twice as comfortable either, this is mostly because, for me, I didn’t have a problem with the back plate in the first place.
For me, I find it a little pricey for the little extra comfort you get from it. I think something around $10-14 might have been a better price to help add that little extra comfort to the back of your Elite head strap, and maybe a few colour options wouldn’t go amiss too.
