Spectrashell OQ9 Earbuds For Oculus Quest Review

The Oculus Quest has some surprisingly decent external speakers built into the headset. They are great if you want to hear what’s going on in your VR world as well as the world around you, but there are times where you may want to be more immersed in the metaverse, so you’ll want to plug a pair of earphones or headphones into the 3.5mm jacks that are located on each side of the Oculus Quest headset.

It’s likely you already have some 3.5mm headphones that you can use with the Quest, perhaps ones that came from your smartphone, but many of them have cable lengths that are too long and they can get in the way during any physically active gaming session. Cables easily get tangled and it soon quickly draws you out of the game when this happens, as you attempt to reposition cables around your neck or body.

The OQ9 in-ear earbuds from Spectrashell has been built specifically for use with the Oculus Quest. Their 16cm in length cable is just long enough to attach to each respective 3.5mm side ports on the Quest headset, so you have nothing flapping around your face or neck, and there are no wires to untangle when sharing your headset with others either.

You get two cables inside the quite basic packaging, one for each ear. A set of small, medium and large ear tips are also provided to suit the size of your ear canal. Being earbuds, rather than earphones, these earbuds go directly inside the ear canal, this allows for better down deadening and improves overall bass response – of which these earbuds have plenty of.

With the correct ear tip used, you can heavily reduce any outside sounds. This is great for enhancing overall immersion in games on the Quest, but you must also be aware of our surroundings and environment with both your vision and now sound being impaired. I always prefer earbuds to earphones, as this creates a tight seal in your ear, to not only block any outside noise but it also really helps to enhance the bass levels in the audio.

The sound quality of the Spectrashell OQ9 are great. I can’t really fault them, the bass is pretty decent (and I do like my bass) and they also have clear mid-tones and their treble is good too. Music in Beat Saber is given an extra level of boost over the external speakers with deep thumping bass resonating through these little earbuds and their 9mm dynamic drivers.

Each earbud is well designed and built. On the external-facing end is a red badge which clearly labels which left or right channel they are used for. They also a decent level of weight to them, thanks to their gunmetal coloured metal casing. This material, I am sure, also helps with their overall warm sound and bass response. Each black cable that connects the business end to the 3.5mm jack is of decent quality, and due to its length, it would be difficult for them to ever get tangled up.

With the earbuds removed from each ear, they simply dangle on their short cable alongside each side of your face, making them easily reachable for when you need to reinsert them again. Being earbuds there is the advantage of having no extra weight on the top of your head, should you be wearing a pair of solid headphones, and with your ears not being covered by on-ear or over-ear earcups, this allows air to flow around your ear, which is ideal during any fitness-based sessions, keeping you cooler in the process.

Considering their very reasonable price of $25 from Amazon, the Spectrashell earphones are a great sounding pair of earphones that come in at half the cost of the official Oculus branded headphones that cost up most of $50. The official earbuds have also had their own bugs and issues of not working, something I have not experienced with these earbuds.

I would have liked a cloth pouch or bag to put these earbuds in when they are not plugged into the Quest, however, placing them inside the compartment of the official Oculus Quest Travel Case keeps them safe and protected.

If you looking for a pair or intrusive earbuds with great deep bass and a pleasing warm overall sound quality that will help enhance your Oculus Quest experience, I thoroughly recommend you give the Spectrashell OQ9 earbuds a listen.
