Using the VR Cover Head Strap Foam Pad feels like you are putting on a totally different headset.
The Oculus Quest is quite a comfortable VR headset when you first unbox it and play around with it for a few hours. Once all that new magic has settled though, you soon uncover some of its quirks. Things such as its front weight, having to get the straps just right, and the issues of getting ‘Quest Face’ after a long session.
These are all things that surface after some time of owning a Quest, and many enthusiasts have already taken it upon themselves to overcome these issues by modding their Oculus Quest into a more comfortable headset, to bring back that same magical feeling of what it was like to put it on for the first time.
We’ve seen and covered a few comfort based accessories for the Quest, most of which have been from VR Cover, who continue to create great products to improve the overall comfort of the Oculus Quest. They have focused primarily at the front of the headset, with their range of VR Cotton Covers, to replacing the stock facial interface entirely with their Foam Interface & Basic Kit to provide a range of Standard, Comfort and the more recently released Slim foam-based padded PU leather covers, but now they are looking at improving the back of the headset with their new Head Strap Foam Pad for Oculus Quest.
This new accessory for the Oculus Quest may not appear to look like much, but once you get one wrapped around the rear straps of your Quest, you wish you had done it sooner. The product is simple to fix onto the Quest. You simply fit the foam padding to the inner side of the head strap and fold over the Velcro tabs around each band of the stock head strap to secure it in place. That’s it!
Putting the headset back on with the
Matched with the Slim foam pad from VR Cover the Quest felt like wearing a whole new headset. Before this product from VR Cover arrived I was closely looking at doing what is known as the ‘FrankenQuest’ mod. This mod features the installation of removing the rear head strap entirely and replacing it with a VIVE Deluxe Head Strap. Its ‘halo’ head strap is meant to improve fit and comfort on the Quest, but now I am using this new foam head strap from VR Cover, all those thoughts have now been forgotten. I really feel that I don’t need it now.
At the price of just $19 for the VR Cover Head Strap Foam Pad, it has saved me a lot of money and the installation hassle of going through the ‘FrankenQuest’ route. So I am thankful that this product from VR Cover dropped when it did.
The size of the head strap cover I received from VR Cover is the thicker foam pad option, which measures 17mm in thickness. There is a thinner 10mm thickness of foam pad you can also opt for, but I feel this thicker padding adds more bulk to the back of my head to help with the headset drop I was experiencing regularly without it. The thicker 17mm version also helps not only create a snug fit, but it is also recommended for use with children or those that have a smaller head shape.
Like the front padding from VR Cover, the head strap foam pad is also made from their PU leather material. This makes it also hygienic by being able to remove and clean it or wipe it down with a cloth after use. Sure this is something you can do with the stock plastic strap it wraps around, but being able to remove it to clean it is an added bonus by keeping your headset hygienically clean.
In short, the VR Cover Head Strap Foam Pad for Oculus Quest is probably one of the most important accessories I would now recommend for any Quester looking to improve the overall comfort and fit of their Oculus Quest. If you find yourself often adjusting your head strap, or you regularly suffer from front weight drop, or perhaps you don’t like the thought of strapping a heavy battery pack to the rear of your Quest to counter the weight of the headset, I wholeheartedly recommend that you head over to VR Cover now and check out this great product.
