TLDR: The BOBOVR S3 Pro Halo Strap for Meta Quest 3 offers comfort, a faster charging battery, and solid build quality. It includes a cooling fan, adjustable forehead pads, and improved rear padding. While some may question the necessity of certain new features, the S3 Pro provides a more affordable and feature-packed alternative to Meta’s official Elite Strap with Battery.
The BOBOVR S3 Pro brings a lot of new features that you probably will not need, but this seems to be the direction its maker believes Quest 3 owners want. The big improvement that comes with this S3 Pro head strap is comfort, the faster charging battery, and its overall solid build quality.
Up front, it is difficult to ignore the large cooling fan that dons the top headband of the strap. Pressing the roll switch on the side of the strap inwards will turn the fan on/off. Rolling it up and down will increase and decrease the fan speed. The fan speed is barely noticeable at volumes under 50%. It becomes very audible at its maximum speed, but not a sound that would be annoying unless playing quiet apps and games on your Quest 3 headset.
The side control part of the strap also doubles up as a display to view fan speed. After a few seconds, it defaults back to the head strap’s battery charge status. Its single included magnetic battery still has the four LED status lights on the casing, but the button to check this status without having to place it on to the head strap is gone, which is a shame. This is where the head strap’s LCD display comes into play, as it is the only way to know how much charge the connected battery has remaining (as a percentage).
The top forehead pads now have a few levels of adjustment, which is great for those who hated them. For me, at their utmost settings, I didn’t even feel any pressure on the top of my head from them – I kinda did on the M2 Pro. The adjustment dial at the back has also been moved to behind the rear part of the strap, which makes this strap easier to rest your head back on a flat surface whilst watching movies in VR. And finally, the rear padding has been improved to feature a higher battery resting point, which alters the overall balance of weight on the head strap slightly, for the better. A portion of the padding now comes further up and over the rear top portion of your head, making the whole S3 Pro feel like you’re wearing a baseball cap-like strap – perfect!
Like the M3 and M2 head straps before it, the S3 Pro has evolved its design into a more rounded and refined halo strap for the Quest 3. Nothing has really been added or cut that makes me feel the S3 Pro is any inferior to the previous halo strap designs from BOBOVR. Everything works and feels and looks just great! The only issue I feel is did we need these new functionalities, or would an S3 non-pro strap without the fan and side display be a better product? Especially when it could have been offered at a much cheaper price. Maybe we will see this sometime soon from BOBOVR, but considering the current stock issues at this time of review with the S3 Pro, I wouldn’t hold out for that any time soon.
The S3 Pro is on sale for £83 or $89.99 from Amazon and on their own store. This strap is a welcome addition to BOBOVR’s product lineup and for the Quest 3 headset specifically. The S3 Pro is the perfect alternative to an Elite Style strap, and at its retail sale price, it is a whole lot cheaper and a lot more feature-packed than Meta’s asking price of its official Elite Strap with Battery, which usually retails for $129.99. So if a halo strap sounds more appealing than a more traditional Elite strap, save some money over the official options and give yourself the comfort you and your Quest 3 need by picking up an S3 Pro today – you won’t regret it!
