Weight & Grip

In this video, I look at a pair of new pistol grips for the Meta Quest 2 Touch Controllers. These grips are more of a visual/cosmetic addition to your VR experience, however, with the added weight of 101grams, they give a little extra front weight to your controllers giving the wearer a total 268grams in weight and with the additional pistol handle-shaped grips, even though you might not be seeing them whilst in VR you will certainly feel them more different than regular controllers.

The pistol grips are well constructed from three injection moulding plastic parts. The main part that covers the controller handle features a pistol-shaped grip, with a textured inner area to help airflow and grip. Personally, I would have also preferred this texture on the palm side. Underneath is a large hole to pass through an attached wrist strap, if you prefer to wear this safety accessory.

Attached to the grip is a lower barrel part that carries most of the weight. This simply slides into the handle part of the grip very easily and it gives a securing click sound once fully connected.

Next is the top barrel part, this slides on top of the lower barrel. Although bigger, its weight feels much lighter than the lower barrel component. A reassuring click from the top barrel completes the whole install. There are two buttons at the front of the top barrel, that when pressed inwards can begin to remove the top barrel, which makes taking apart the whole grip very easy and swift. You can also just slide the top barrel along to remove the controller for use in other non-pistol based games.

Build & Materials

Unlike most 3D printed grips and earlier pistol grips that I have reviewed, this AMVR pistol grip features some alternative colouring in its plastic stuck on parts, such as the black iron-sights, exit barrel and a slim lower part of the grip that gives the illusion of an inserted magazine clip.

Ridges along the top barrel are also coloured bronze/gold along with a similar coloured AMVR logo that finishes off this grips overall look. I like it. It also looks like a weapon from the game Destiny. I would love it more if they could make the top barrel move in time with in-game shots being fired, for that full arcade booth experience.

Fit & Feel

Once fully built, the grip feels solid and there is hardly any movement of the controller that is sandwiched inside it. In games like Pistol Whip, Robo Recall, Space Pirate Trainer, and Zombieland, these grips feel great and add a little extra immersion in games. Games that require dual wielding or automatic rifles do now work so well, even pistols in Gun Club VR didn’t work as I couldn’t get based the pistol grips to load my pistol’s magazine. So in other games, your experience might vary on the weapon that is used and the gestures you need to do to reload it.

It’s just a shame my stubby short fingers feel a little uncomfortable over time with these grips attached to the controllers. The larger lower portion of the handle requires extra grip in this area, and it takes some getting used to something this different over the smaller stubby handle of the original controller. If you have longer fingers or bigger hands, then I think you’ll enjoy these grips a lot more.

As pistol grips go, I think AMVR have done a great job. These are much better than some other pistol grips I have tried, they look the part but most of all feel the part too.
